War Bonds

In my research I found posters for War Bonds during both World Wars  particularly interesting. I think these posters would have a lot of relevance to LinkedIn because of its image of a social network for professionals, with many employment opportunities existing. For this idea I was thinking along the lines  of a slogan that plays on the idea of 'Investing' your time in LinkedIn for some financial/career gain.

The above image is a poster created in 1917 encouraging the purchase of 'Liberty Bonds' to help finance the US involvement in WWI. I really like the very simple colour scheme of this poster because it gives it a very distinctive aesthetic.

I also find the image below very interesting because it has a very similar palette to the first one, despite being of a much later era. Its design is much more simplistic which I find gives it a very striking look.

Beginning Research

I began researching for the Social Media propaganda poster by looking at the running theme of togetherness and community that underpins many of the posters I've looked at before. I believe this spirit of collectiveness is at the heart of any social media and is what keeps it growing and developing. I like the following example because it emphasises the unity between all walks of life regardless of status, nationality (to a degree given the times) or race:

Again, it links with that same philosophy that defines what a good social media is, something that is open to all to contribute to, as well as shape its future as a community.

This is another example of a poster that I think mirrors the multinational aspect of social media today, in that it shows how countries all across the world are united in a single cause, regardless of how much distance separates them.

Brief Overview

Our brief for the project was to create a propaganda poster based on a specific aspect of a Social Media from the flowing list:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Flickr
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Blogger
  • Vimeo
  • Youtube
For me I think the main thinking point so far will be defining a specific aspect of a Social Media that is distinctive enough to incorporate into a poster design. Some on the list have specific features the differ from others but are generally very similar to others, such as Youtube and Vimeo, and Facebook and Google+. At this point I think I'm not going to outright choose a specific one, but try and develop a few concepts that I can later form into a couple of really solid ideas.

Another point to consider would be the era and style of Propaganda poster I choose to use, but this is something that can easily be influenced by the Social Media I end up basing my ideas on.
